Different Kinds of Liver Surgeries to Treat Cancer | SurgSci

There are several types of liver surgeries that are used to treat cancer. The main types of liver surgery include liver resection, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation, and irreversible electroporation.


Liver resection is a surgery that removes the part(s) of your liver with the tumors. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a procedure that kills cancer cells by heating them to very high temperatures. Microwave ablation is another procedure that kills cancer cells by heating them to very high temperatures. Irreversible electroporation is a newer type of liver surgery that uses electrical currents to kill cancer cells.


Other types of liver surgery include liver transplant, biliary atresia surgery, surgery for liver cysts, and surgery for liver abscesses.
